Dr. Covey didn't invent the habits, he observed them through reading success literature over centuries and brought them together into a sequential flow of 7 habits that helps us become more effective in our lives by living them. The habits help us grow in our maturity from dependence to independence to interdependence.

If you want to question whether the habits work or not, simply try living the opposite and you can clearly see how dysfunctional that would be. The 7 habits are underpinned by principles (universal laws) just like gravity is a principle in physics, so they are timeless and apply as now as much as they did centuries ago.
